Anticipating Future Greenhouse Gas Legislative Requirements

In 2011, WKC assisted a major oil refining company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with an extensive programme to quantify their entire organizational Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in a systematic manner. The project was developed in anticipation of future legislation related to Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction in the UAE, opportunities offered by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and existing regulatory requirements to report GHG’s. This involved the development of a “carbon footprint tool” to allow accurate on-going reporting in line with international standards. This emissions monitoring programme also included a source testing campaign to corroborate calculated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from major combustion sources with actual measurements. This would then be used to confirm the accuracy of the carbon footprint tool.

Through the development of a bespoke Carbon Footprint Tool, the client has been able to improve upon the quality and consistency of previously reported Greenhouse Gas’s.

Utilizing WKC’s extensive work experience of working with oil refineries around the world, a bench-marking exercise was undertaken to compare the ‘carbon intensities’ (a measure of greenhouse gas emissions relative to the facilities refining capacity) of the company’s assets with a selection of global refineries.
