Environmental Impact Assessment for the Optimisation of the Kupferberg General and Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility

The City of Windhoek would like to construct new general and hazardous waste cells adjacent to the existing Kupferberg General and Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility, which is located approximately 9.5 km southwest of Windhoek. The 140 ha area of interest for the expansion of the waste disposal facility is located directly to the north and east of the existing site.

The proposal is to infill some of the valleys upstream of the existing site to generate enough landfill to service the City of Windhoek for 15 to 20 years, if practically possible. WKC undertook the air quality and noise impact assessments for the project, comprising of baseline air quality and noise measurements in addition to quantitative modeling using SoundPLAN (noise) and AERMOD (air quality). The project comprised of a Hazardous Cell, Leachate Lagoon, Contaminated Stormwater Dam, and a larger General Cell.
